Get your plumbing license.
In NSW, all plumbing work needs a license, whatever the job is worth. The rules are strict. If you have the paid years, we arrange your qualifications and prepare your application.

- What NSW asks for
- Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (CPC40920) and 2 years’ paid work to contract, or a Certificate III in Plumbing (CPC32420) to work supervised
What the license lets you do.
Without a contractor license, you can only work under someone else. With your own, you quote the job, sign it off and keep the profit.
What it covers, on the regulator’s own page
- Take plumbing contracts in your own name, on homes, shops and factories.
- Supervise apprentices, and sign off the work of certificate holders.
- Add draining and gasfitting when you qualify for them.
Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (CPC40920) Draining and gasfitting each need the Certificate III plus extra units
We arrange it with an RTO
2 years of paid work as an employee Without an apprenticeship, the years count from your Certificate III date
We help you prove it
A police check No older than 4 months when you apply
We do it for you
Good to know: The Certificate III alone can get you a tradesperson certificate, to work supervised.

Questions people ask us.
Something else on your mind?
Ask us on WhatsAppDo I need a license for small jobs?
Yes. In NSW, plumbing, draining and gasfitting need a license or certificate whatever the job costs. The $5,000 limit for other trades doesn’t apply here.
Can recognition of prior learning (RPL) get me a contractor license?
It can get you the qualifications. It can’t replace the 2 years of paid work as an employee. Without an apprenticeship, those years start from your Certificate III date.
Are plumbing, draining and gasfitting one license?
No. Each is its own category, and you need a license for each one you work in. You can apply for several at once.
I trained as a plumber overseas. Can I work in NSW?
NSW doesn’t accept overseas qualifications for a license. Overseas plumbers start with a skills assessment by a provider approved by Trades Recognition Australia. We explain your options.
How long does it take, and what does it cost?
Your work history decides the route, so we look at that first. The free check ends with the full cost and a timeframe.
I plumb in another state. Can you help?
Yes. Every state licenses plumbers, each with its own rules. Tell us where you work and we’ll check what that state needs.
